Nero Marquina Marble

Dark, glossy and intense, Nero Marquina marble is strikingly stylish. Bright white calcite veins streak across the inky backdrop of this stone, producing a bold, monochromatic effect. As with all natural stones, Nero Marquina comes in many guises, from deepest black with fine, white veining to softer black with veining that covers more than half of each slab. What doesn’t alter is its impact. Nothing brings drama to a room like Nero Marquina, which is why it’s so beloved of architects and interior designers for high-end homes and luxury hotels alike.

Nero Marquina marble takes its name from the town of Markina in the Basque region of Spain, where it was first quarried and brought to prominence. For much of its history, this stone was relatively unknown outside Spain, but today it's one of the most sought-after black marbles in the world, now also sourced from carefully selected quarries beyond its original region. While Nero Marquina can be used for everything from fireplaces to designer furniture, we shape it into vanity units, washbasins and striking bathtubs designed to bring drama to any space.

Finishes

Once you’ve settled on Nero Marquina marble for your bathroom, we can offer a range of finishes.

A glossy highly reflective surface, resulting in a supremely refined surface. A polished marble is the least porous finish, giving it additional protection. This finish, on a polished black marble sink for example, won’t stain as easily as other finishes can and does not demand the same frequency of sealing. Plus, its shine offers a semi-reflective surface that is both attractive and helps hide fingerprints.

A honed finish has a satin-like feel that is velvety and smooth to the touch. This finish brings out the full character of the stone, while softening its colour. As it is more porous, it requires more frequent sealing than a polished piece, but it is also more resistant to scratches and excellent at masking etches. Choosing honed Nero Marquina will give a black marble bathroom a more contemporary look than the classic polished finish.

A common decorative technique used with Nero Marquina marble is that of book-matching. This is where a single block of marble is cut into two or more slabs, each being polished. We then place the slabs end to end, so that their veining creates a mirror image, continuing from one slab to the next in a continuous flow.

All varieties of onyx marble have translucent portions in each slab. By experimenting with the finish and the lighting source, it’s possible to achieve breathtaking backlit onyx effects.
