Blue Macauba Marble

The spectacular Blue Macauba stone, also known as Azul Macaubas, is in fact a quartzite rather than a marble. Quartzite itself is not a mineral. Instead, it’s formed when quartz grains found in sandstone fuse under immense pressure and heat, creating a stone that is exceptionally hard and virtually indestructible.

It's these properties that make Blue Macauba quartzite ideal for bathroom sinks, bathroom vanity tops, shower surrounds, kitchen countertops and all outdoor living spaces. Its exquisite colouring is due to the presence of the rare mineral dumortierite, making this an extremely precious stone and a unique way to create a modern blue bathroom.

Finishes

Once you’ve settled on Blue Macauba for your bathroom, we can offer a range of finishes.

Creates a glossy, highly reflective surface. Due to their density, quartzites like the Brazilian Blue Macauba are particularly suited to a highly polished finish, which amplifies their shine.

A honed finish has a satin-like feel that is velvety and smooth to the touch. This finish brings out the full character of the stone, while softening its colour. As it is more porous, it requires more frequent sealing than a polished piece, but it is also more resistant to scratches and excellent at masking etches.

Given the rarity and striking beauty of a blue stone, the prospect of a bookmatched Blue Macauba feature wall is breathtaking. To achieve this effect, we cut a single block of Blue Macauba into two (or more) slabs, polishing the cut surface of each slab. We then place the slabs end to end, so that their veining creates a beautiful mirror image, continuing from one slab to the next in a continuous flow.

A common decorative technique used with Carrara white marble is that of book-matching. This is where a single block of marble is cut into two or more slabs, each being polished. All varieties of onyx marble have translucent portions in each slab. By experimenting with the finish and the lighting source, it’s possible to achieve breathtaking backlit onyx effects.
