Carrara Marble

Carrara marble is perhaps the most celebrated of all marbles, and it’s easy to see why. Effortlessly beautiful, this elegant stone has a background that can range from soft white to pale grey, feathered with light grey veining. It is named after the Carrara region in central Italy where it originates from. Quarries here have produced more marble than any other place on earth, since the time of the Roman Empire. Michelangelo favoured Carrara marble for his sculptures, most notably his Renaissance masterpiece David, and it has been used to create the world’s enduring monuments, from the Pantheon in Rome to Marble Arch in London.

Beauty and history are not Carrara marble’s only assets. This is a supremely versatile material, with numerous applications, including flooring, wall tiles and kitchen surfaces, but when used to create a white marble bathroom it really excels. Its dense structure makes it naturally water resistant and it has a delicate, smooth surface, making it the perfect tactile choice for baths, washbasins and countertops. Carrara is also immensely durable – any bathroom furniture created from this iconic white marble will reward you with a lifetime of style and functionality.

Finishes

Once you’ve settled on Carrara marble for your bathroom, we can offer a range of finishes.

A glossy highly reflective finish, resulting in a supremely refined surface. Polished white Carrara Marble is one of our most popular finishes at Riluxa, and as the least porous finish, it will give your white Carrara sink or countertop additional protection from staining.

A honed finish has a satin-like feel that is velvety and smooth to the touch. This finish brings out the full character of the stone, while softening its colour. As it is more porous, it requires more frequent sealing than a polished piece, but it is also more resistant to scratches and excellent at masking etches. A honed or sandblasted finish is ideal for a Carrara marble shower tray, to ensure it has a non-slip surface.

A pressurised flow of sand and water creates an aged, matte finish. The natural colour and pattern of the stone is subtly softened, with the surface displaying a uniform texture of light dots and grooves.

A common decorative technique used with Carrara white marble is that of book-matching. This is where a single block of marble is cut into two or more slabs, each being polished. We then place the slabs end to end, so that their veining creates a mirror image, continuing from one slab to the next in a continuous flow.

All varieties of onyx marble have translucent portions in each slab. By experimenting with the finish and the lighting source, it’s possible to achieve breathtaking backlit onyx effects.
