A Guide to Made-to-Measure Bathroom Fixtures

Designing a custom bathroom will help to transform your home into a personalised idyll that oozes your inner interior designer. Especially if you choose customised fixtures—products that built to fit snugly to the exact measurements of your washroom, in other words. You might choose to have these built by an artisan, which will result in amazing, bespoke furniture—just be mindful that this can be costly and time-consuming. Also consider incorporating fixtures that can be ordered at the click of a button, but also made to your exact measurements, like those offered by Riluxa. Let’s take a look at some of the different products you can find and how they can be crafted to your specific demands.

Bespoke bathtubs

A custom-built bathtub is, no doubt, the centrepiece of any luxury bathroom. However, we’d contend that having a made-to-measure tub installed is something everyone should consider, if your budget allows it.

First of all, think about how the bath fits into the space. It’s not just a case of its generally being “too big” or “too small”. What about the bathtub that’s “almost perfect”? Is there anything more frustrating than having to settle for near-perfection when a few millimetres more or less could have given you actual perfection?

Secondly, it’s no longer necessarily a matter of paying a craftsman a small fortune to build a one-off bathtub that’s unique to your space (though nice if you can afford it). Solid surface materials like Corian® provide an affordable, high-end answer to this.

Because many Corian® bathtubs are handcrafted to order, they can be built to the exact length and width you need to fit your space. Great whether you’re choosing a freestanding tub or a wall-to-wall, built-in bathtub.

Custom-built basins

Putting in a bespoke washbasin will enable you to more effectively plan the space around the basin. Think about the little things, like when you open the bathroom door. If your bathroom sink is in close proximity, you could find yourself only being able to open the door part way without bumping into it. Ideally, you’ll have a washbasin that’s the perfect width and depth for your space.

Choose a custom bathroom company that can also give you those little extra details, like built in towel rails—if you have a smaller bathroom, isn’t it handy to have it right there on the basin rather than taking up more space?

How about the ability to choose whereabouts in the piece of furniture the actual sink is located? Do you naturally reach to the left or the right for the toothpaste? Plan where most of the countertop space will be located accordingly.

Also, have you thought about whether or not you want your basin to have tap holes? You might want wall-mounted taps, after all. A made-to-measure bathroom sink should allow you to choose all these things and more.

If you’re having a custom marble washbasin, you might want to choose between glossy and matt marble.  If you’re putting in a Corian® basin, you’ll no doubt want to choose from one of the 100+ different colours available. Why limit yourself to off-the-shelf options?

Custom cabinetry

Custom-made bathroom vanities and cabinets give you the flexibility to plan your bathroom storage solutions to your exact needs. What’s more, they allow you to choose the perfect material for your taste freely and without limitation.

First of all, though, ask yourself if you need a custom vanity. There are some stunning off-the-shelf cabinets on the market today, so one of these might suffice. If you’re after a real high-end finish to your bathroom, however, or you have very exact size, space and storage requirements, a bespoke bathroom cabinet might be a wiser investment.

You might find yourself looking to restore a beautiful, old piece of antique cabinetry—to turn it into the perfect vanity unit for your new bathroom. In this case, you might simply want to get a vanity top made to measure. Replacing custom bathroom features is, of course, also completely possible. You can even order them online within a few easy clicks.

Made-to-measure shower stalls

You might think that a shower cubicle is a shower cubicle... Aren’t they all much of a muchness? What, exactly, is customisable about a rectangular space with an overhead tap?

Well, not only do some people want that rectangular space to be a very specific size of rectangle—some of them might not want a rectangle at all. So, why should they be forced to have one?

A beautiful walk-in shower with a high-end shower tray should be made to whatever size you want it to be. If you have a large bathroom, you’ll no doubt want a bigger shower tray to really make a statement. If you have a smaller shower room, you’ll likely want to be able to take that size down to its bare minimum to make the most of the available space. Materials like Silestone, Gel Coat and Solid Surface all allow you the option of choosing the size that best suits you.

Some companies, like Riluxa for instance, also allow you to choose those materials built to fit very exacting spaces. Imagine the perfect corner in your bathroom for a shower to be installed where the width at the back is 90cm but the width at the front is 120cm. Wouldn’t you want the shower tray to fit snugly into that corner, rather than having to settle for a standard width of 90cm at both ends?

Custom-built bathroom products don’t have to be the stuff of daydream. Start budgeting for yours today.
