Ultra Minimalist Interior Design in a French Countryside Home

Deep in the French countryside lies a grand country house overlooking gently undulating hills, stone walls and ancient farmhouses. When owner Dominique de Surrel decided to update the centuries-old property’s many bathrooms, the team at Riluxa was honoured to supply everything she needed.

Not wishing to alter the traditional period architecture of the home, Dominique was nonetheless keen to introduce all the modern comforts of a contemporary bathroom. She embraced a ‘less is more’ philosophy and, like Mies van der Rohe, focused on clean lines, simple rectangular forms and pure natural materials.

Let’s take a look at how Dominique set about this ambitious renovation job and why she chose to use Riluxa products throughout.

First of all, tell us a little bit about yourself - are you a homeowner or a design professional and where do you live?

My name is Dominique de Surrel, I’m a homeowner and I live in France – more precisely, in Bourgogne.

Tell us about your bathroom project - was it a renovation or did you start from scratch? How long did it take and did everything go as planned, or were there any unpleasant surprises along the way?

Our project was a renovation of an old country house and it was quite a big undertaking because we were restoring several bathrooms at once. The construction work lasted five months in total. We hired an architect to manage the project and their input was absolutely vital in terms of marrying the technical constraints with the aesthetical considerations. Nevertheless, I also got very involved because it was important to me that there be a real flow and cohesion across the various projects.

Tell us the story of your relationship with Riluxa - how you found us and how has your experience been?

It was actually the material that attracted me in the first place, I knew that I definitely wanted to use Corian in the bathrooms. Once I began my search, I quickly discovered Riluxa’s site and absolutely loved what I found. To tell you the truth, I ended up browsing your site constantly! Being able to input the measurements of the washbasins and the furniture directly on the website allowed me to explore every possible option to optimise the space I had available.

What Riluxa pieces have you used in your project?

I bought all of the furniture and basins for this house from Riluxa - three vanity units, two countertop bowl basins, one freestanding bathtub and one wall-mounted washbasin.

What attracted you to these specific pieces?

I loved the simplicity of the forms – the clean lines and minimalist shapes.

What design style were you going for - and what influenced the choice?

I enjoy the statement that clean, contemporary lines make in an old period house. A minimalist all-white palette also allows the house’s decorative features, such as high ceilings and ornate windows, to shine.

Tell us what you think of your project now that it's finished.

I'm over the moon with the final result.

Anything else you’d like to convey to our readers? Do you have any advice for future Riluxa customers wanting to create their dream bathroom?

When your project begins to take shape, I would definitely recommend getting in touch with the Riluxa advisors, who were a great source of advice for me. Also, I’m happy to add that everything I ordered was delivered with the utmost of care, which I really appreciated.
