A visit to a spa is an amazing way to unwind and invite some well-needed relaxation into your life. It’s about finding a place of serenity where you can escape from the pressures of the world outside. But spas are generally retreats that you only visit occasionally—usually when someone buys you gift tickets to one. How can you bring that same interior design aesthetic into your own home, so you can have that spa sensation every day?

Let’s take a look.

Incorporate plants into your bathroom

Putting plants in the bathroom will immediately make it feel more like a spa. The calming effect of nature is part of what makes the spa experience so relaxing and you’ll see lots of greenery around in the spa environment.

Choose plants that like a moist environment—succulents are ideal and, because they’re always green, they don’t shed their leaves when winter comes, either.

There’s a fine line between a spa effect and a bathroom that feels like a rainforest, so don’t go completely wild. But do experiment with a few different plants until you get that relaxing feeling you’re after.

Remodel your bathroom in white

Nothing feels more spa-like than a white bathroom. There’s an almost clinical crispness to a pristine, white space that gives off a perfect sense of cleanliness and calm.

You can choose from lots of different shades of white. But the cleanest, arguably most spa-like white would be a very pure white like Corian® Glacier White.

If the idea of a completely white bathroom feels a bit too hospital-like for your tastes, incorporate a natural element like stone or marble. This will help to keep it feel connected to nature and, so, very calming.

Reduce clutter for a minimal bathroom

Bathrooms that are overflowing with products and shelves and rails and bathmats and towels—well, they just do not feel very relaxing. You wouldn’t see a spa filled with multiple shampoo and conditioner bottles, all used to different degrees—some, perhaps not for months. So, get that stuff out of there!

Minimalist bathrooms are so popular because they give us a sense of tranquillity and calm—exactly the feeling we pay for when we visit a spa. So strip your bathroom back to the bare essentials and find ways to disguise or neatly store your bathroom products such as cabinetry without handles.

Buy multiple sets of matching towels

One thing you’ll notice about a spa is that the flannels, hand towels, bath towels and robes are all made of the same fabric in the same colour. This gives them a sense of uniformity that has a relaxing effect.

So, invest in some plush new towels for your personal spa space. Buy multiple sets, too, so that, when you wash a towel, you don’t end up sneaking one of your old, tatty ones into the mix.

You would never experience the chaos of new, plush towels mixed in with old, mismatched face cloths and bathrobes at a real spa—so don’t do it in your own bathroom.

Oh, and finally, make sure you fold them neatly and put them away when they’re dry—it’ll make you feel much better than walking into a bathroom with damp towels hanging off the shower door

Get creative with aromatherapy

Essential oils and other natural scents can have a positive influence on our mood, helping us to relax and unwind. That’s why you’ll find them to be so prevalent in luxury spa retreats.

Bring a little bit of that luxuriousness into your own home with an essential oil plugin. It diffuses the oil into the air and you can change the scent to keep it fresh and noticeable.

Lavender is the most popular essential oil scent because it has that fresh floral smell. Cinnamon, sandalwood and wild orange are also popular scents for the bathroom, but there’s a whole range to choose from.
