Blinded by the white

If a bathroom was a sound, a white bathroom would go ‘ping!’ It’s the look of the unabashed control fiend – the clean freak whose design choices dare any visitor to actually make use of the facilities. White marble tiles. White solid surface fixtures. White accessories. It’s like Superman’s Fortress of Solitude, only there’s a toilet in the corner.

Seriously, though, does it get any more fresh-feeling than the almost clinical cleanliness of Corian® Glacier White? If you want people to stop at the door and ask themselves whether or not they should take their shoes off before entering the bathroom, you know what colour you should be going with. Plus – and here’s the obvious point – white is classic. No one will bat an eyelid in shock at your design choices ten or twenty years from now. You can safely say that a white bathroom will stand the test of time.

Back to black

Contrary to the opinions of some, it’s not just Wednesday Addams, Sisters of Mercy fans and Darth Vader who favour the dark side of the decorative colour spectrum. Black bathrooms are for everyone! Especially the sexy. Make no mistake about it, a black bathtub or a black Marquina marble vanity top with slate black tiles and black accessories will bring out your inner panther. *Miaow!*

On the distinctly less sexy side of things, black is also very practical because it doesn’t show up the dirt as easily as white, so you won’t have to clean it as obsessively. But forget about that for now and back to the spicy sensuality. Look, you don’t have to be the kind of person who has a black silk robe with a dragon on the back hanging on the back of the door to have a black bathroom. There’s a tasteful minimalism to a black bathroom that elevates it to the level of the truly sophisticated. It just so happens to be a tasteful minimalism with carnal undertones.

The life aquatic

For those of you who love the romance of water, the bathroom is, of course, the perfect place to bring a little bit of naval style into the home. An enchanted Atlantis of your own design, with beautiful Laguna Blue or the freshwater sparkle of beautiful Blue Macauba. Sure, you’re worried that it’ll end up looking like a scene from Popeye if you’re not careful, but trust your inner hipster to get that perfect nautical bathroom balance just right.

A tasteful anchor here, a well-placed starfish there. Heck, you could go so far as to have your mirrors shaped like portholes, if you really want to edge toward the boundaries of good taste. Breton-style stripes could be incorporated into your paintwork to bring a much gentler marine-like quality to the space. It’s all about making the bathroom reminiscent of life on the water but still very much rooted in the home – a few lovely succulents in white ceramic pots dotted around will bring it right back on land.

Forest fantasy

A bathroom that feels like a rainforest is, if you’ll excuse the pun, a natural inclination for many of us. A little bit of the outdoors brought indoors. It’s a moist environment, after all, so there’s a natural connectivity to the elements that the rest of the home protects us from. Luscious greens, deep wood tones and plants of all shapes and sizes in pots and hanging baskets will make you feel like you stepped right onto the set of Avatar. Only the waterfall will be piping hot because it’s a beautiful walk-in shower.

Whether you’re going for the direct approach, incorporating the likes of a Corian® Mahogany Nuwood vanity as a real statement piece, or that fresh Japandi feel with bamboo, teak and muted colours, a bathroom filled with woodland and forest colours will have you wondering if you just heard the distant trumpeting of an elephant as you shower (though it was probably just your other half yelling upstairs that breakfast is on the table). Ah, romance!

Passionate, dangerous, fiery red

Red? In the bathroom? Are we quite mad? Isn’t the bathroom meant to be a place of tranquillity and calm? What place does a colour with all the subtlety of a perfumed, wet kiss have in our palace of purification? Well, climb down off your penny farthing there for a second great-grandma/grandpa, because this is the 21st Century and, if you haven’t heard, Maximalism is back in a big way. Why do you think Corian® has expanded its colour range to such massive breadth of choice?

Look, if you need any convincing of the mid-century modern glory of a red bathroom, you only need to look to the stunning example in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, which was based on the bathroom at the Arizona Biltmore Hotel, designed by organic architect supreme Frank Lloyd Wright. If cutting edge design and an enduring commitment to modernism are your hallmarks, then seriously, get with the red. Don’t let the fact that it’s the colour of a stop sign, er, stop you.
