Who would put a bathroom in the bedroom? More and more people than ever, actually.

Do bathrooms belong in bedrooms? House Beautiful says yes! Though it might seem like the kind of interior design choice made for those with more compact spaces (and it certainly is a great way to maximise useability of a small home), a bathroom in the bedroom is actually the height of good taste, especially within a more opulent property. Imagine walking into your own, grandiose suite of relaxation and privacy. It’s practical, it’s sexy and it’s very, very indulgent.

That’s why more and more people than ever are opting for open bathroom concepts. Even in spite of the prudish naysayers who tried (and failed) to stop the trend from taking hold when it first began to grow a couple of years back. It’s a victory for free-spiritedness and self-assuredness and has the great psychological impact of putting paid to our insecurities and giving us a real sense of boho liberation.

Putting a shower in the bedroom

One of the simplest ways to get that open concept bedroom-bathroom feeling is by incorporating a shower into the bedroom. A stunning, walk-in shower will create a real statement in the space, especially when it’s designed to feel like a natural extension of the bedroom. In 2021, it’s not just hotel bathrooms that have all the fun of incorporating unified sleeping and showering spaces. The practicality goes without saying – stepping out of the shower and straight into your clothes, freshly laid out on the bed. But it’s that sense of connectivity between restfulness and wakefulness that makes it all the more luxurious.

Putting a bathtub in the bedroom

For those of us with both the room and the views out onto a private space, there’s little more indulgent than a bathtub in the bedroom. It helps connect us to the outdoors, increasing our sense of tranquillity and relaxation as we bathe. Whether to go for freestanding or recessed all depends on the size and style of the space and will take some careful bathtub shopping, though the natural inclination would, of course, be to go for a freestanding bathtub, boldly placed right in front of a large window. A classic clawfoot bathtub will give you that spring freshness of the country manor while a more contemporary freestanding tub with feet will allow you to bring minimalist calm to the space.

Will an extra bathroom add value to my home?

Putting in a second bathroom is always a great way to add value to your home. But is an open concept bathroom and bedroom a wise property development choice? Well, it all depends on the property. There are right and wrong ways to go about incorporating a bathroom into the bedroom. It might not be the most thrilling sight to wake up to your other half reading on the toilet two metres from where you’ve been sleeping, for instance. You can  easily, however, by hiring an interior designer, especially in a bigger home. And, if you live in a small house, putting a bathroom in the bedroom might actually be the most obvious way of increasing the value of your home.
